Prismacolor Markers on 9"x12" bristol. February 28, 2009.
Fan art from the anime series "Shōjo Kakumei Utena," featuring Arisugawa Juri and the phantom shadow of Shiori.
I intended to have this layout act as a portrait or profile of Juri, her deepest and darkest secret being the main theme. Shiori, whose image is trapped within Juri's locket, enters from the right-hand side of the page, acting not as the person-Shiori, but as the phantom-Shiori that haunts Juri's heart. The locket wraps around Juri's sword, insinuating it is the power behind her duel with Utena in episode 7. The chain pulls tightly against Juri's neck, as if strangling her with its weight. The position of the sword trying to separate the phantom-Shiori from Juri is like her ire for the girl, trying in vain to cut the memory from her. Juri is turned away from Shiori's silhouette, attempting to shun the power of miracles.
In execution, this did NOT come out as I had hoped, and it certainly does not flow with the fluid and feminine art style of "Utena" as it's far too bold in color and value, and the cell shading is presented in the wrong fashion.
This picture went through a series of extreme changes, which is probably why it did not come out as I wanted. I first had thought of going monochromatic or gray scale for this piece, then decided I really liked the oranges and peaches of Juri's outfit and general person. Then, as I started in on local color from the character and series, I realized I didn't have the appropriate colors for her hair, rose petals, and skin tones. Being excrutiatingly low on money and time, I tried to make due with what I had. And then, I ran into a crap-ton of problems with Shiori, as I was trying to meld two forms over the top of each other, but wasn't quite sure how. She came out far darker in value than I had planned, but I felt going lighter might have diminished the power of her presence.
The structure of the picture also suffered, as I was trying to expend most of my efforts in proportion in relation to the "Utena" art style and the actual art style itself. In doing so, I sacrificed the integrity of the compositional layout of the piece, especially with Juri's hands, since they seem to come in from absolutely nowhere and are hard to follow. While I felt I was maintaining such a strong hold on proportion in the "Utena" style, I realize now that there are some very awkward areas of Juri's body (namely the size of the hands and face) and how all the components flow together.
In the end, I had high hopes for this piece, but now do not hold it up with the other Utena fanart I tried. I would like to try drawing Juri again, as she is a very interesting character in my opinion, but I'm fairly burnt out on her right now, seeing as this picture completely ruined my interest in the topic for the time being.
"Shōjo Kakumei Utena" is a manga by Chiho Saito and anime directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara; I do not own any part of the series or manga, including any of the characters or concepts portrayed.
Comments and criticisms greatly appreciated. Thank you.
My word, that's absolutely exquisite! Despite your concerns, I really do think it retains a heavy sense of the surreal motion of the series, and your work on the cell-style shading of Juri's hair, the locket and the sword's mantle are very impressive to me.
The arch of Shadow Shiori's neck and how she clutches at the locket are effective and enticing, and speaks much of her personality.
I dare say I'd be tickled pink to have a print of this on my wall.
Very cool layout! I love how the sword slices the scene in half! Also I love how the necklace crosses across the sword and into the Phantom's hand. The falling petals really round out the scene too! Finally her hair looks really, really great! Amazing job on all fronts!

Thanks for the comment about the hair! I spent a TON of time trying to get that to look even remotely decent. I didn't have an orange, so it took forever to get the color to somewhat look like the anime character. :S
I'm glad the sword doesn't pose too much of a distraction. I was worried that it would act like too much of a divider between the two sides of the picture.
Thanks again!

Again, your great comments help me a lot! I fought with this piece excessively! Juri came right away, but then fashioning Shiori into it, along with the angle of the sword and ensuring the power of the locket remained visible were elements that I had to battle with.
Thank you for the comment about Juri's hair. I spent the most time there, trying to get the coloration to hold up (I don't have any orange markers...) and I ended up feeling like this piece would not be able to handle the excessively bold coloration. It pleases me to know that you believe it embraces or suggests at the pacing of the series. Thank you for that.
I'm also glad that the phantom-Shiori does not feel too disintegrated from the piece; she didn't seem to sit right whenever I put a color down...
As for prints, I have always entertained the idea of doing so, but have been hesitant because I was once told selling or distributing fan art is illegal... I don't know much more than that, but I do know I have a multitude of fan art I can do nothing with!! Any suggestions?
Thank you again for your great comments and support!! I really appreciate it!

Even if the picture doesn't follow the Utena style, it is still an amazing piece. And doing what you did with only what you had I believe that this picture was very well done! I'm trying to see all of the mistakes you've pointed out, but I can't see them, but of course I'm not familiar with Utena's style. The colors are amazing, and the style of the picture itself is awesome!

Thank you so much! I guess I got a little too critical of my own work. I'm glad that the format and style both work. I was definitely trying to meld my personal style with the Utena one, which are really rather different.
Again, thanks so much for your comments and support!

Definitely! Juri was an instant favorite of mine. I loved the battle between her and Utena in episode 7; one of my favorites! And Juri's character design is just too much fun. I mean, that hair is just crazy!! And fun to draw
